
Ötzi: What a 5,300-Year-Old Body Still Has to Say
A frozen corpse pulled from an Alpine glacier in 1991 has become the most thoroughly examined human being of the ancient world — and the cold case of his murder is still being solved.

On September 19, 1991, two German hikers named Erika and Helmut Simon were descending from the Tisenjoch, a high pass in the Ötztal Alps on the Italian-Austrian border, when they noticed a brownish shape protruding from a melting patch of ice at 3,210 meters above sea level. It looked, reasonably enough, like a body — and it was. What no one on the mountain that day suspected was that it had been there for roughly 5,300 years.
Found by Accident, 3,210 Meters Up
The initial assumption was mundane: a missing mountaineer, one of the dozens who die in the Alps most years. Austrian police and Italian carabinieri were both called in because the site straddled a contested, poorly surveyed stretch of border — a later precise survey placed the body about 92.5 meters inside Italian territory. A clumsy first recovery attempt with a jackhammer damaged the corpse's hip before anyone grasped what they were dealing with. It was not until September 24, five days on, that Innsbruck archaeologist Konrad Spindler examined the remains and the copper axe beside them and pronounced the body "at least 4,000 years old." Radiocarbon dating later refined that estimate: the man died around 3300 BCE, making him roughly 5,300 years old at discovery — older than the Great Pyramid of Giza, older than Stonehenge, a genuine Copper Age European preserved essentially intact by ice.
He was nicknamed Ötzi, after the Ötztal Alps where he was found, and he remains the oldest natural human mummy ever recovered in Europe, with skin, organs, tattoos, hair, and even stomach contents still intact after five millennia.
A Homicide Investigation Five Millennia Cold
For years, Ötzi's death was assumed accidental — a man caught by bad weather while crossing an unforgiving pass. That theory collapsed in 2001, when a CT scan revealed an arrowhead embedded in his left shoulder. The arrow had severed a major artery beneath his collarbone; forensic reconstructions suggest he bled out within minutes, unable to remove the shaft himself since much of it had broken off before or during his final struggle. He also suffered a severe blow to the head around the same time, whether from a fall or a further attack is still debated.
The forensic picture gets stranger still: DNA testing recovered blood from at least two other people on a single arrowhead, a third person's blood on his knife, and a fourth person's blood on his cloak — evidence suggesting a violent confrontation with multiple people, and possibly that he carried a wounded companion before his own death. No motive has ever been proposed with confidence. Ötzi remains, by a wide margin, the oldest cold-case homicide victim in the world, and his killer's identity will never be known.
The Man Himself
Forensic analysis puts him at roughly 45 years old at death, about 1.65 meters (5 feet 5 inches) tall and 50 kilograms, with brown eyes rather than the blue eyes early reconstructions gave him. His lungs were blackened from a lifetime of exposure to open campfire smoke, and his joints — knees, lower back, hips — showed significant wear consistent with a life of hard physical labor and mountain travel. He also carried genuine health problems that a modern doctor would recognize immediately: whipworm eggs in his colon, hardened arterial plaque putting him at meaningful risk of cardiovascular disease, worn and partially decayed teeth, a healed rib fracture, and — in a 2012 finding that made him the oldest confirmed case on record — DNA evidence of the bacterium that causes Lyme disease.
His last meal, reconstructed from stomach contents analyzed as recently as 2018, was eaten less than an hour before he died: fatty meat from an Alpine ibex, meat from red deer, and grains from einkorn wheat, a detail that told researchers he died shortly after eating, not after a long period of flight or starvation as earlier theories about his final hours had assumed.
The Toolkit of a Copper Age Traveler
Ötzi was extraordinarily well equipped for his era. He carried a copper-bladed axe — among the finds that helped date and characterize the transition into the Copper Age in the Alps — along with a flint dagger in a woven sheath, an unfinished yew longbow, and a quiver holding fourteen arrow shafts, only two of which had been finished with flint points and feather fletching. He also carried a fire-starting kit that included flint, tinder fungus, and pyrite, plus bark containers used to transport embers.
His clothing was a patchwork of at least five animal species: a coat and leggings of goat and sheep hide, a bearskin cap, and shoes of deerskin and bearskin stuffed with insulating grass and netted with tree bark — sophisticated enough that experimental archaeologists have since built working replicas to test its real-world performance. He also carried what researchers have described as an early first-aid kit: pieces of birch fungus strung on a leather cord, a species with known antibacterial and anti-parasitic properties, of a kind that would have been useful against the whipworm infection his body was already carrying.
Skin, DNA, and a Revised Portrait
Multispectral imaging conducted in the 2010s mapped 61 separate tattoos across Ötzi's skin — simple lines and crosses made by rubbing charcoal into small cuts, concentrated along his lower spine, behind his right knee, and around both ankles. Their placement correlates closely with areas of joint degeneration his body was already showing, leading several researchers to argue the tattoos were a form of therapeutic treatment, a kind of proto-acupuncture, rather than decoration or status marking.
A full reanalysis of Ötzi's genome, published in 2023, overturned assumptions that had stood since his DNA was first sequenced a decade earlier. The new analysis found his ancestry was overwhelmingly derived from early Anatolian farmers, with essentially no detectable admixture from Eastern European steppe herders — a genetic profile purer than that of most contemporary Copper Age Europeans, whom researchers now think had more mixed ancestry. The same study concluded he likely had dark skin, darker than that of any living European, and was predisposed to male-pattern baldness — meaning the sparse hair found near his remains may reflect his living appearance rather than damage from thousands of years in the ice, correcting a long-standing museum reconstruction that had given him a full head of hair.
Science's Most Studied Mummy
Since 1998, Ötzi's actual remains have been kept at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano, Italy, inside a specially built cold cell that maintains the same low temperature and high humidity as the glacier that preserved him, visible to the public only through a small window. Every few years, new imaging or sampling techniques are applied to him again, and the case reopens a little further: a wound reassessed, a pathogen identified, a genetic assumption reversed. Few individual human beings from any period of history — let alone one who died more than three thousand years before the pyramids were finished — have been studied this closely, this repeatedly, or this productively. Ötzi did not choose to become one of the best-documented humans who ever lived. The ice that killed him is also, entirely by accident, the reason we know almost everything about how he lived.
